Experience and levelling
Where experience comes from, how it is shared, the six growth curves, and what a level-up brings.
In short
- Every wild, trainer and gym battle you win pays experience. Player battles pay none.
- The Pokemon that fought gets the full amount; every other party member gets half.
- Each species follows one of six growth curves to level 100.
- A level-up brings stats, free training points, possibly a move, possibly an evolution.
How much
For each opposing Pokemon that faints, PokeRival uses the Generation 9 scaled formula: the defeated species' base experience times its level, divided by five, scaled by the difference between its level and yours so a high-level Pokemon beating a low-level one earns little and the reverse earns a lot, plus one. A trainer's or gym leader's Pokemon pays one and a half times a wild one. Every surviving party member receives it: the active fighter in full, the rest at half.

The curves
| Curve | Experience to level 100 |
|---|---|
| Erratic | 600,000 |
| Fast | 800,000 |
| Medium Fast | 1,000,000 |
| Medium Slow | 1,059,860 |
| Slow | 1,250,000 |
| Fluctuating | 1,640,000 |
Each species has one, shown on its Pokédex page. Two Pokemon on different curves fed the same experience will sit at different levels; the bar in battle and on the Team screen shows progress through the current level, not toward 100, because that is the number that means something.
Level 100
The cap. Experience past it is not kept. A Rare Candy raises a Pokemon one level without a battle and an Exp. Candy adds a fixed amount of experience.
What a level-up brings
- Stats recomputed from the new level. The formula is in the stats guide.
- Training points: three per level, four with a Training Weight held, to spend in the Train tab. See How to train EVs.
- A move, if the species learns one at that level. Learn it from the Moves tab, choosing what to forget if it already knows four.
- An evolution, if the Pokemon meets one's requirements. See Evolution.

Where the levels are
Wild battles on a route for the first twenty levels; route trainers for the next stretch, at half again the rate; the four training grounds for climbing into a gym's window, their keepers' Pokemon fighting at the band you paid for. The ladder is in What to do next.
