Using an item

Open the Bag, pick the pocket, pick the item. Use applies it: a Potion asks which Pokemon, a Rare Candy levels one, a TM asks which Pokemon and then which move to replace. The Bag tells you in advance when an item cannot be used, and why: already at full HP, not fainted, level 100, EVs maxed.

Give puts the item in a Pokemon's hands. A Pokemon holds one; giving another swaps them. The item stays with the Pokemon through the PC, a trade and an evolution, and comes back to the bag with Return.

In a wild or trainer battle the Bag is open: balls, medicine and battle items all work mid-fight. Against another player it is closed.

Where items come from

  • Shops. The marts and the Fondaco counters; see Shops and Poké Marts.
  • Quests. Most side quests pay an item, and the chain finales pay rare ones: a TM, an evolution item, a Pokemon.
  • Wild Pokemon. Every wild win can drop a crafting material, by the Pokemon's type: a Normal type drops Coarse Tuft or Soft Down, a Fire type Cinder Ash or an Ember Sac. Some species drop their own, a rare few drop something precious, and a shiny or a legendary always drops one.
  • Trades. Items ride along with a trade, so a player with a spare Leftovers is a shop too.

Each item's page says which of these it is.

Materials

The 77 materials come only from wild battles and have no shop price. They exist for quests: "bring six Coarse Tuft", "bring four Dense Geodes". There is no crafting bench yet; the name says what they are for in a later update, and until then the quest givers are the only people who want them.

TMs

A TM teaches its move to any Pokemon that can learn it and is used up in the teaching. The Fondaco counters sell forty-five of the most useful, by badge; the rest come from quests. The Pokemon's Moves tab shows which TMs it can take.
