Old Harbour

Here the water is black and still, boxed in by quays older than anything else in Monding. Timber piles lean at tired angles, soft with rot and furred with green weed at the waterline. Moored hulks sit low in the basin, their paint gone to grey, their rigging slack. Along the landward side runs a row of narrow chandlers' shops, shutters half drawn, coils of rope and tarred blocks heaped by their doors. A customs shed of corrugated iron squats at the end of the row with one lamp burning over its door. Lanterns hang from bowsprits and bollards. Their light lies on the water in long, broken yellow streaks. Rubbish gathers in the corners where the quay meets the wall. The cobbles are slick with fish scale and tar, and somewhere below them a drain mouth breathes cold air. Across the basin, the new quays are dark and shut for the night.
